And as explained by Instagram:
“You can also create a collection out of your existing saved posts. Tap the plus icon in the top right corner, give your collection a name and select the saved posts you’d like to add.”
It all seems a little Pinterest-like, right? On Pinterest, you save content into Boards which you can categorize into your chosen topics. The key difference between Pinterest Boards and Instagram Collections is that Collections are private, they’re not visible for others to see. But then again, the social elements of Pinterest, like public Boards, are probably less relevant than they used to be. As the platform puts more focus on eCommerce and becoming an online shopping engine, it’s more about personal discovery than anything else - and as such, Boards are likely more used as personal notations than connective devices.
As noted, the addition of Collections also aligns with Instagram’s wider push towards boosting business use on the platform. Back in December, when Instagram announced the new save feature, they specifically noted that it could be used to keep track of “a funny video you want to remember, a new outfit you like or even inspiration for an upcoming vacation”. The latter two use cases obviously point directly to business opportunities on the platform, and when combined with the expansion of Shopping Tags and improved business tools, it’s easy to see how Collections could hold business potential.
That’s not necessarily a use-case you can optimize for, you can’t control what someone saves, and as they’re not public, you can’t set up a new collection as a product showcase, but even so, it does give users a new option for gathering ideas on the platform, which could help boost interest.
